Usually you have 3 fights 8 minutes each. There is a cash prize.

For Suraj, this was a difficult commitment.  In August he prepares for, supervises and runs the Beachside Martial Arts and Fitness Summer Camp. That is 9 weeks from 8am to 6pm.

His training could not be as rigorous as he would like. Training had to be consolidated to 2 hours a day, one hour drilling and one hour training.

He wanted to prove to himself that it was possible to run a business as well as compete at a high level.

The day of the tournament, his weight class opponent did not show. Suraj stepped up to compete in the absolute or open category.  It is a competition by belt status and not by weight. He was the underdog and thus felt little pressure. Nevertheless, he won. His go to position of closed guard helped him feel confident and in control.
